An avid art collector, a steadfast tennis player, a long time sailor, an Olympic-class skier – all this and more describes the life and times of Donald Bren.
For close to five decades, Bren and his company Irvine Co. has chosen the art of planning, designing, constructing and harmonizing homes in well planned communities. His designs had it all – landmark schools, enchanting parks, wide open spaces, personalized shopping centers and more. The aim was simple; create a way of life for self sustaining communities.
Focus on development, but not at the cost of the environment. This has been a byword for Bren, who has single handedly been responsible for the demarcation of ecologically sensitive areas in South California for perpetuity. He ensured segregation of thousands of acres of land for communities to enjoy in peace.
In fact, one of his notable achievements was the demarcation of ecologically sensitive habitat for endangered plant and animal species under the Natural Community Conservation Plan in Orange County, California. He established the Irvine Ranch Conservancy with a corpus of USD 50 million for the conservation and replenishment of the natural resources of land.
He had everything going for him when he was young. Born to famous Hollywood producer Milton Bren and noted civil leader Marion Bren, he dabbled in everything, even in the Olympic ski team from which he had to pull out due to injury. The call of the nation prompted him to join the United States Marine Corps as an officer. His career started as a founder for the Burne Company, which was into construction and real estate. He soon floated and merged all his interests in to the Irvine Company, which was involved in architectural designing and long term real estate investments. The move from a high class developer to becoming America’s premier real estate investor has been smooth yet subtle.
Yet the real estate tycoon is a known philanthropist. In fact he features amongst the top ten philanthropists in the US, mainly focusing on education and research. He has not been without his fair share of controversies. The most recent one has been the acrimony surrounding his personal life. Recently, his two sons raised a claim on Bren, seeking huge compensation as child support. The court ruled in Bren’s favor, though it created its fair share of national headlines.
Bren is a recipient of the University of California Presidential medal. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was ranked 19th among the Forbes 400 wealthiest men in America in 1990. Indeed, a business tycoon and philanthropist par excellence!
